Welcome to my studio! As we move through the year, our skin changes with the seasons. What worked during the hot, humid summer may not be the best fit for your skin as fall brings cooler, drier air. This month, I’m focusing on ingredients—specifically, which ones you may want to swap out to keep your skin healthy, hydrated, and glowing. Read below to learn which ingredients can best support your skin as we transition into fall.

🍁 Fall Ingredient Spotlight:
What to Skip & What to Use Instead
Cooler, dryer weather calls for extra nourishment and protection. Some skincare ingredients that worked in the summer may not provide enough hydration or may even strip the skin in the fall. Here are some common ingredients that may not work as well this season—and what you can replace them with for better results:
-
Skip: Foaming Sulfates (like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate)
-
Why: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate isn’t inherently “bad” for your skin, but it does strip away natural oils—something you don’t want to lose in the drier fall months.
-
Swap For: A gentle cleanser that removes impurities without disrupting your skin’s protective barrier. My favorite cleanser is safe for sensitive skin and leaves the skin feeling clean, soft, and balanced rather than tight or dry. If you’re acne-prone, here’s what I recommend instead.
-
-
Skip: Alcohol-Based Toners
-
Why: They can be overly drying, especially in low-humidity environments.
-
Swap For: Instead of stripping the skin, this toner helps refine pores while also calming sensitivity and maintaining hydration levels. It’s a perfect fall-friendly choice.
-
-
Skip: Lightweight Gel Moisturizers
-
Why: While refreshing in the summer, they often don’t provide enough protection against fall’s dryness.
-
Swap For: A richer moisturizer packed with barrier-repairing ingredients. This cream delivers deep hydration, improves resiliency, and protects skin from environmental stressors without clogging your pores.
-
-
Skip: Harsh Exfoliants (like high-strength glycolic acid used too frequently)
-
Why: Over-exfoliation can lead to irritation and dryness in cooler weather.
-
Swap For: A gentle microbead exfoliant that smooths away dull skin without irritation. It’s effective for polishing the surface while leaving skin calm and refreshed. This can be used on skin with sensitive conditions such as rosacea or tough conditions such as psoriasis.
-
-
Skip: Oil-Free Formulas (across moisturizers or serums)
-
Why: While they can help in hot, humid months, they often don’t provide enough nourishment in fall.
-
Swap For: Nourishing Oils – Oils like jojoba or argan (or the Remedy Rehab Oil blend I carry in the studio) mimic skin’s natural lipids and help lock in moisture, making them perfect for protecting against fall dryness.
